Learning online has become very popular. It’s so easy, available, and inexpensive. However, finding the best platform for your needs can be challenging because there is so much information out there.
You want the best educators but you’re not sure if you need to pay in order to learn from the best. For example Masterclass VS Youtube, why would you pay for Masterclass if you can find all the information you need on free Youtube videos? That’s why I’ve spent some time researching the differences between the two platforms and I’m about to share my findings with you here.

Youtube or Masterclass? – Which One Is Best For Me?
Are masterclass courses better than Youtube? Offhand I was inclined to think so because Masterclass is a paid platform whereas Youtube is free of charge. Usually, when I know that something is free of charge it’s my tendency to perceive that its value must be less. But this isn’t always the case, so I decided to dig deeper.
What do I like about Masterclass?
The teachers in Masterclass are real celebrities, so this awakened within me even more enthusiasm and excitement to learn from the best. For example, Natalie Portman teaches acting, Gordon Ramsey teaches cooking, and Serena Williams teaches tennis, just to name a few.
Masterclass has compiled hundreds of courses from the best teachers in the world. The production itself is of the highest quality and navigation of the platform is easy and clean. It feels more like watching Netflix rather than learning from a more structured classroom place like Udemy.
I enjoyed the relaxed environment. There is also a hub to communicate with other members, ask questions and discuss what you learned. You can download workbooks in the hub too.
All of the above-mentioned aspects made Masterclass very attractive to me.

What don’t I like about Masterclass?
I honestly like most things about this platform and what it offers for such a low price. However it doesn’t include accreditation for completed courses, so it’s not something you’d want to add to your resume.
Also, there are no live classes, everything is recorded material. But the hub is a great place to discuss the courses and interact with other students.
Another thing that bothered me a bit is that there is no access to the teachers to ask questions, but again you can use the hub to ask other students any questions that you may have.
Payment is also an issue, it’s not that it’s so expensive but again brings me to the question of asking myself whether to do Masterclass or Youtube courses. So let’s look into the advantages of Youtube and find out the differences between the two, and if Masterclass is indeed worth the monthly payment.
Pros of Masterclass
- Inspiring well-known teachers
- Huge variety of courses
- Great atmosphere
- Helpful and friendly student hub
- High-quality content
- Very reasonable price
- App available
Cons of Masterclass
- No accreditation
- No live classes
- No access to teachers
- Paid membership
What Do I Like About Learning Via Youtube?
Youtube is a great free portal for watching videos. There is so much video content available on thousands of subjects. However, what I noticed is that the more targeted you are as to what you want to learn and who you would like to learn from, the easier it is to find the kind of content that will help your educational pursuits.
If you only search for a topic rather than a topic and specific teacher, you might also stumble upon some great new teachers that you’ve never heard of, but sometimes you do need to filter through the content until you find what you’re looking for.
Of course one of the main advantages and something that I think we can all appreciate is that it is free of charge (unless you have the premium version).
What Don’t I Like About Learning Via Youtube?
For me, the most frustrating thing was finding the right teachers to teach me the subjects that I wanted to learn. Youtube is literally swamped with video content and a staggering amount of new videos are added every single minute. So finding the right course can be time-consuming.
The advertisements are also a big issue as they are distracting and tend to take up way too much of my precious time. I tend to completely lose focus when so many ads are thrown in throughout the video content. This could however be avoided by purchasing the paid premium version of Youtube.
I’m also very skeptical when it comes to learning from strangers. Can I really trust that the information is true? After all, if I was an expert in the subject then I wouldn’t be watching the videos in the first place.
As for the teachers themselves, are they really qualified to teach? Or are they just out to make a quick dollar at the expense of innocent viewers? Now don’t get me wrong, there are most definitely some really good teachers and channels out there, but as a beginner in the subject can I really recognize them?
Another issue that comes to mind is learning the content in the right order. There are some subjects that are very complex and learning them in a step-by-step process is critical. This can be a bit confusing on Youtube because of the vast amount of content related to the subject and the fact that sometimes videos are not presented in any particular order.
Pros of YouTube
- Variety of content
- Ease of use
- Free Membership
- App available
Cons of YouTube
- Too many choices
- Distracting ads
- Unqualified teachers
- Not enough structure
Final Verdict
So what did I discover? Is Masterclass better than Youtube?
All in all, I think Youtube is great for learning randomly but not so great if you want to do a fully structured course.
Masterclass is a terrific platform for learning complete structured courses. The wide variety of interesting subjects, renowned teachers, as well as its easy-to-navigate system and friendly student hub makes it a winner for me.
From my personal experience using both platforms I totally recommend Masterclass courses vs Youtube. The price is extremely reasonable for the variety and quality of educational content that you receive.
Masterclass is a very pleasant learning experience that you can enjoy either alone or with your family. There is the option of signing up for a family membership at a great price. You can also give a membership as an original and meaningful gift to someone special in your life.
