Here’s an interesting storyout of Gaithersburg, Maryland: Gaithersburg Elementary School has abolished homework. Instead, students are being asked to read a book for about 30 minutes a night.
There’s an interesting discussion in the commentary on how this practice is “dumbing down” education and leaving students ill-prepared for their later years in school and beyond when homework will be required. Others argue that homework gives kids extra practice that is needed, helps them to learn responsiblity, organization, and time management.
