Memorial Day, and the long weekend associated with it, is much more than a reminder of summer’s impending arrival. This holiday honors the memories of those we have lost, particularly those who have served our country.
For area schools, it’s a poignant teachable moment. For example: The South Colonie Central School District hosts a Memorial Day assembly with local war veterans as honored guests. Likewise, Monticello High School in Sullivan County will hold a student assembly at which the local American Legion will formally replace the auditorium’s tattered American flag with a new flag donated to the school.
